Once a year, we have a social work intern join us for the year to observe and support our work, getting hands-on training in a fast-paced learning environment that is aligned with their graduate curriculum. This year we’ve been working with Jenna Borowski, a graduate student in the Social Work master’s program at Portland State University. Learn more about Jenna in the q&a below!

Name: Jenna Borowski

Your role: I am an intern with Family Forward. I’m currently working towards my Masters degree in Social Work at Portland State University.

What project are you working on with Family Forward OR what are you studying in grad school that’s connected to the work we’re doing? In my intern role, I am currently learning the ropes of policy advocacy at the Oregon Capitol. I’ve been watching a lot of hearings, getting to do some lobbying, and learning how to craft testimony for important bills being heard during this session.

What do you hope to gain from this internship? Through my internship with Family Forward, I hope to continue building my comfort with different aspects of political advocacy and learn how Family Forward supports the community to impact issues that are important to them.

What would you like to be when you grow up? When I grow up, I want to be a badass community advocate.

If there was a zombie apocalypse, what would be your role and why? If there was a zombie apocalypse, I would be the survival strategist and utilize my budding gardening skills to grow food for the group! Hopefully everyone would be happy with carrots, beets, and spinach…because that’s about all I’ve mastered at this point!
